Description Family Fabaceae Originating from North America A small, spreading, deciduous tree with clusters of crimson/purple flowers on the smooth grey bare branches in early spring before the heart-shaped, dark red/purple leaves appear. The new leaves, as they emerge are glossy and deep bronze when young and the tree continues to produce these throughout the growing season, adding to the rich red/purple older leaves. In autumn the leaves turn gold. Such a pretty specimen and without doubt one of the most colourful trees for a small garden. Forest Pansy often naturally grows into a spreading, multi-stemmed tree but with a little pruning, it’s easy to maintain a single trunk with a wide umbrella shaped crown with a fine branching structure – very elegant and distinctive. Grow in fertile, moist but well-drained soil in full sun/part shade. Height and spread after 10 – 20 years 8m x 8m
